Many Canadians are willing to accept simple material benefits (cheap gasoline, cheap personal products) in exchange for looking the other way while the elites wreck the environment and reproduce their capital. Some personal shame would be a good first step to a change... In my experience, most Canadians can't imagine an alternative to the materialistic middle-class lifestyle or are socially unable to abandon it. If you abandon the car/house/possessions/vacations lifestyle, you instantly become a social outcast or - even worse - a loser. That simply doesn't appeal to middle-class people.
