Forgive my chronic negativism, but in a word, I’d say Ms Barlow’s four-step conceptual “solution” to the climate crisis is “oversimplified”. As one of the nominal leaders of Common Causes — yet another in a growing list of social movement initiatives — Maude’s solution does not inspire confidence that this new group will be any more successful that the others in building a nationwide, multifaceted, counterpower movement. Moreover, perhaps the majority of Canadians feel too economically secure and materially comfortable and safe to be roused to action.

Having said that, I wish Maude and her partners all the best.

I agree that democracy is an essential part of the solution to our environmental crisis but TRUE democracy NOT the democratic smokescreen under which most of the so called democracies currently operate. The way to cut through the sham is to implement legal mechanisms to immediately recall public representatives who, X% of the relevant electorate think have or are behaving, in ways which are contrary to the community’s interests and to rescind the the errant legislation which they backed.
